Onion Healing & How It Affects You

Have you ever noticed how, after just one or two treatments, you begin to feel so much better? It’s as if the clouds have lifted and you’ve found your old self again—the one you thought had gone missing for quite some time. Or perhaps you feel something even more remarkable: a new zest for life, a sense of renewal, as though you’ve been quietly given a fresh start.

And then, quite unexpectedly, other little troubles begin to make themselves known. You wonder, with a touch of puzzlement, whether you’re slipping backwards. What is happening here?

This is where the idea of what I like to call onion healing comes in.

Picture an onion. You peel away the first layer, thinking the work is done, only to discover another layer beneath. You peel that one too, and there is yet another waiting for you. And so it goes. Each layer must be approached gently, patiently, before the next can be revealed. There may be tears along the way—onions have that effect—but tears are not always a bad thing. They can be cleansing, even liberating. (I’ll write more about the language and power of tears in another piece.)

There may be just a few layers; there may be many. That is the nature of onions—and of healing.

Our bodies, like our hearts, heal in stages. Slowly, thoughtfully, and at their own pace. If you’ve had a great deal to contend with—physically, emotionally—your healing may come in small, manageable pieces. Sometimes, after only a handful of treatments, you feel a surge of improvement. Wonderful! But then, perhaps, some symptoms return. It’s easy to forget the progress you’ve made—the subtle changes, the quiet victories. They are still there, and they matter. They are signs of what is possible if you continue, patiently, to peel away the layers.

Healing is rarely a straight path. It is more like a gentle spiral, moving inward toward the core. Each layer brings you closer to that place of ease and wellbeing. It may feel discouraging at times, but in truth, it is a positive sign—a sign that your body is ready for the next step.

This is especially true if life has been complicated, as it so often is, and for many years. You may feel well enough, and then small issues rise to the surface during treatment, hinting that you could feel even better. How do you reach that place?

We have many tools to help: foot reflexology, facial or ear reflexology, Emotional Release Reflexology, aromatherapy massage, lymphatic drainage. Your body—your whole self—may need different things at different times.

And when you reach the core, when the last layer is gone, you find something precious: freedom. Freedom to enjoy the fullness of wellbeing.
